4-star wide receiver Johntay Cook II announces top 7 schools

DeSoto (Texas) wide receiver Johntay Cook II is down to seven schools, he announced on Tuesday.
Cook is the No. 55 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 11 wide receiver and the No. 8 prospect in Texas.
Along with in-state Texas and Texas A&M, Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Ole Miss and Ohio State made the cut for the Cook.
The 6-foot, 170-pounder visited Alabama over the summer and has seen Texas A&M a few times. But Texas has been heavily recruiting Cook and got him on campus once this summer and three times this fall for unofficial visits.
He told InsideTexas last month that he has been impressed by the Longhorns offense under head coach Steve Sarkisian. Texas A&M’s more run-focused offense has caught his eye, too, but not in a particularly good way.
“Here is the difference between Texas and Texas A&M,” Cook said. “Right now, Texas has the scheme but not the players, A&M has the players but not the scheme. I mean A&M is running like the Wishbone offense, it’s cool and all but if Jimbo opened it up that would be serious.”

The Aggies did sign a pair of in-state receiving studs this cycle, including Five-Star Plus+ wideout Evan Stewart. Depending on how Fisher’s offense showcases the passing game next season could move the needle for Cook.
Cook’s relationship with 2023 On3 No. 1 player Arch Manning has been well documented, and the latter has a strong interest in the Longhorns as well.
“With me and Arch we don’t even talk about recruiting that much we just chop it up,” said Johntay Cook II. “He mainly just tells me how he can’t wait to throw to me and for us to play together. I do know how much he likes Texas, though.”
