Tre Johnson is the 2023 On3 Consensus No. 2 ranked player in his class. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard is averaging 16.0 points per game, playing on Nike’s 17u EYBL Circuit.

“I create shots,” Johnson told On3. “Once I get going making shots, I start looking for my other people. My teammates can make shots when the defense plays up on me too. I’ve been working on my mid-range and footwork, getting cleaner looks. I watch a lot of Jayson Tatum and how he gets his spacing to get to his shots. And Kevin Durant, how he uses his length to make shots.”

The smooth shooting guard has turned the heads of college coaches as well. On3 caught up with Tre Johnson to talk about the state of his recruitment.

Texas, Baylor, and Kansas are some of the schools we hear from the most, who have offered,” Johnson said. “I’ve been on unofficial visits to Baylor, Texas, and UCLA.”

Johnson talks recruitment

Texas: “They helped Kevin Durant become the player he is today. I obviously watch a lot of him, and to know Texas developed him. It was a good game that Texas ended up winning against Tennessee. It was an intense game.”

Baylor: “They are all about defense; that is their main philosophy. I saw that they play tough-nosed on the ball defense there. It was loud for the game I went to; you could hear the echo in the gym. And they kept getting stops, so the fans were going crazy.”

Kansas: “They are telling me I would be a great fit for their program. They like guards who can create their own shots and create off the dribble.”

UCLA: “The season was over when I went there, but still seeing the guys in the gym, getting in work, it spoke to the culture, the work ethic out there.”

“They haven’t offered, but I may try and get up to Gonzaga soon,” Johnson said.

Gonzaga: “They always have a lot of players going into the league. They give their guards a lot of freedom to play with too.”

Johnson’s take

“Player development will be big for me,” Johnson said. “I’d like to go to a place that will get me ready for the next level. I want to go somewhere they give their guards the freedom to play and do what they work on in the gym on the floor.”

Overtime Elite and G-League

“I just went on a visit to OTE (Overtime Elite) last week,” Johnson said. “I like the strength and conditioning guy, and their player development is really good there. We didn’t really talk about the pro contract; if I were to go, I wouldn’t take the pro contract. Just the scholarship option they have and keep my eligibility. Both are real options for me; I’m open to anything right now.”
