Madison (Ala.) Madison Academy athlete Deuce Spurlock had his list down to a handful of schools. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder was focused on Michigan, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, and Syracuse.

Then in-state school Auburn offered over the weekend, and the Tigers gave him something to think about, but in reality, Spurlock’s mind was already made up.

“I really made my decision on Michigan last Tuesday,” Spurlock said. “Since the season began, they have really been recruiting me heavy, and that is what I started to think Michigan could be the school.

“I made the decision in my mind Tuesday.”

Jim Harbaugh got the news from Spurlock Saturday

Michigan moved to 4-0 on the season with a win over Rutgers Saturday, but before the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh got big news.

“They called me out of the lounge and took me to coach Harbaugh’s offense, and that is when I committed,” Spurlock said. “It was me, my mom, and my dad, and I just told him that I loved Michigan and that I was committing.

“It was exciting and coach Harbaugh was very happy.”

Michigan won out for multiple reasons, but the education was no. 1.

“Michigan offers one of the best educations in the world. They are up there as one of the top public schools in the world, and that education is big for me. That was the biggest reason I chose Michigan.

“Then, Michigan will allow me to play on the big stage for great coaches, and they will help me get better and build a name for myself.

“Michigan is just the best place for me. It offers me everything I am looking for.”

Michigan fan base has Spurlock excited about playing in Ann Arbor

Spurlock camped at Michigan in June, and that is when he earned his offer. He got a chance to see the facilities, meet the coaches, and get a feel for things in Ann Arbor then, but seeing game-day allowed him to see much more.

“Game-day in amazing at Michigan,” Spurlock said. “They had 110,000 fans cheering, and it is a feeling I won’t get used to as a player.

“The fans at Michigan want their players and their team to succeed, so they show great support. Michigan is a historic program with great fans and I know the people there want the best for their players.”

Being a Michigan commit will make Spurlock work harder

This decision means a lot to him and his family. Spurlock is relieved to not only have the recruiting process behind him, but to know he is going to college for free.

He earned this offer.

Spurlock took the time to camp at Michigan, earned the offer, and he is excited about his future.

“Being a Michigan commit is going to push me to work 10 times harder,” Spurlock said. “I want to get better. I want to be the best I can be there and I am happy to be committed to Michigan.”

George Helow, the safeties coach was Spurlock’s lead recruiter. Defensive coordinator Mike McDonald was very involved too. The whole defensive staff was active in Spurlock’s recruitment and he believes in that staff.

“The coaching staff is great and I am excited to play for them. They want me to come in as a WILL linebacker. They want me to roam the field, be versatile, and be able to make plays.

“I love the fit and how they are going to use me, so I am excited about it.”
