Anthony Black, Arterio Morris headline the Texas State Tournament

Anthony Black and Arterio Morris headline the Texas UIL Boys Basketball State Tournament in San Antonio beginning today. 

The long standing state tournament features four teams from six classifications that will play state semi-final games Thursday and Friday with the State Championships to be played Saturday. Teams have to first win their region before heading to San Antonio with the opportunity to cut down the nets.

This years state tournament will feature some of the top prospects in the state, and country in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 classes. 

Beaumont United vs Dallas Kimball is a big time rematch

Beaumont United (34-3) beat Dallas Kimball (30-8) to win the 5A state title in 2021 in dramatic fashion with On3 Consensus 4-star and Houston signee Terrance Arceneaux hitting a three-pointer to send the game in overtime, and another to win the title in overtime. 

The rematch will take place at 7pm CT tonight. 

Beaumont United Division I prospects is headlined by junior SG Wesley Yates. The No. 36 ranked prospect in the 2023 On3 Consensus has programs such as Baylor, Auburn, LSU, Stanford and others in hot pursuit. Yates put up 40 in a triple overtime playoff win, and has ascended to be one of the top perimeter threats in the 2023 class nationally.

Dallas Kimball Division I prospects is led by On3 Consensus 5-star and Texas signee Arterio Morris leads Kimball. One of the nations top open court players and athletes, Morris has shown an improved perimeter game as a senior.

State’s most under recruited 2022 prospect takes the court tonight

Mansfield Timberview enters the state tournament with a 35-4 record led by senior combo guard Chandell Weaver. The 6-foot-2 guard is fresh off a regional tournament MVP performance scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a regional final win over a Brendan Hausen led Amarillo team. He has been the best player on the floor in the majority of playoff games, including 33 point performance with six made three-pointers in round two. Weaver plays above the rim in transition, with ideal pace in the half court game, and plays both ends with quick hands and reactions. The On3 three-star with a grade of 88 is beginning to receive mid-major and high-major attention, including Oral Roberts and Texas A&M.

Anthony Black, Ron Holland lead Duncanville 

Anthony Black remains one of the top 2022 prospects yet to make a college decision, or potential pro decision. The On3 Consensus 5-star continues to be linked to Arkansas with Gonzaga, TCU and Oklahoma State trying hard. There is also the possibility of the pro route if the G League comes calling.

Ron Holland, F, 2023 – G League is considered a real threat to the likes of Kentucky, Oregon, UCLA, Houston and others. Holland is an On3 Consensus 5-star in the class of 2023 with a vastly improved game off the bounce and on the perimeter as a junior.

More prospects to watch in San Antonio

McKinney (34-5) junior Ja’Kobe Walter is the No. 21 ranked prospect in the On3 Consensus for the class of 2023. Walter has made an official visit to Auburn. He has programs such as Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas and many others in pursuit.

On3 Top 100 and Ole Miss signee T.J. Caldwell is one of the most explosive athletes nationally in the 2022 class. The 6-foot-3 guard leads Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy (34-4), the favorite to win 4A. 

Calvert junior M.J. Thomas is the con of Calvert had coach Michael Thomas. The 6-foot-6 forward has offers from Oklahoma State and New Orleans.
