Breaking down the early commits in the updated 2027 On300 rankings

National Signing Day for the 2027 class is more than 18 months away, but more than a dozen of the country’s current top 300 prospects are already committed to a school.
The recently updated On300 rankings for the group feature 20 commitments with 13 different programs represented at this very early stage. And that includes multiple schools with two or more commitments from rising junior blue-chippers.
While Penn State sits atop the list with a trio of early pledges, a few other schools aren’t far behind.
Penn State leads with three early commits in 2027
The Nittany Lions are one of the programs who most consistently identifies top targets and lands early commitments from them. That’s no different in this cycle, as they lead with three On300 pledges at this stage. That includes top-32 players Kemon Spell, Khalil Taylor and Layton von Brandt — all of whom would be five-stars if the rankings ended today. Spell checks in at the top of that list as the No. 8 overall player in the class.
On3’s Scouting and Rankings department writes this about him as a prospect:
“Kemon Spell leads what is a very strong running back group early on in the 2027 cycle. He is an elite tackle-breaker at this early stage and has had back-to-back outstanding seasons to start his high school career. He is an explosive, versatile, instinctive runner, who is very difficult to bring down as a young prospect.”
Alabama, Florida State, Miami among others with multiple pledges
After Penn State, five other teams have two commitments apiece in the updated rankings: Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and Ole Miss.
