Texas A&M reels in one of their first somewhat surprising signees of the day. College Station (Tex.) linebacker Chantz Johnson has committed and signed with Texas A&M. It is not a complete surprise given his recent offer, but Johnson was originally set on signing in February but Jimbo Fisher and his staff convinced him to do otherwise.

Johnson was offered by the Aggies just six days ago, on December 15.

His decision to sign in December was something that came to be in the 24-48 hours leading up to signing day. Johnson picked the Aggies over offers from Arizona State, Marshall, UTEP, Army, among others.

In his junior and senior seasons, Johnson racked up 118 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 18 quarterback hurries, nine sacks, and four pass deflections.

At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Johnson is ranked as the No. 65 linebacker in the nation and the No. 112 prospect in the state of Texas, according to On3. On3 is higher on Johnson than the rest of the industry, who ranks him as the consensus No. 99 linebacker in the 2023 class.

The College Station prospect is a phenomenal athlete, especially for the linebacker position. The three-star prospect reports speed times of 4.47 in the forty yard dash and 11.1 seconds in the 100 meter dash.

More On Signing Day

The majority of the country’s top football recruits will sign with their school of choice over the next 72 hours. More than 90 percent of the top-300 prospects in the On3 Consensus are already committed, but a handful of five-stars are set to make their decisions in the next few days. Add on to that the potential flips and decommitments we could see, and as it always is, signing day should be long on drama and excitment.
