When you’re the son of an NBA basketball player, life as a teenage hoops prospect is different than for other kids. When you’re Bronny James, the son of NBA superstar and future first-ballot Hall of Famer LeBron James, you might as well live in a different stratosphere.

After recent reports by ESPN and On3’s Jamie Shaw of James’ recruitment beginning to heat up heading into his senior season, the attention on him has only increased. On Tuesday, NBA analysts Jalen Rose, Matt Barnes and Kendrick Perkins took turns making pitches for respective schools that they think Bronny should attend.

And on Wednesday, following the latest intel from Shaw that James is leaning toward committing to Oregon, Bovada Sportsbook released betting odds on the subject.

The Ducks are currently the favorite to land James at -200, with North Carolina — a team who wasn’t considered to be in contention by Shaw — next at +350. UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and Ohio State were the other teams listed.

Bronny James Recruiting Profile

The 6-foot-2 James is not considered to the type of prospect his father was coming out high school, but he is largely thought to be one of the top shooting guards in the 2023 class. According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, James is the No. 44 player in his class. On3 ranks him slightly higher as the No. 38 rising senior in the country.

Jamie writes this after scouting James for the better part of two years on the high school scene and AAU circuit:

“Bronny James is a sturdy guard, with a strong frame, long arms, and broad shoulders. The 6-2/6-3 guard is a noted defender at the point of attack. He moves his feet well laterally and plays with a chip on his shoulder. Offensively he does not really show blow-by burst in the half-court, but he attacks closeouts well, and he is strong in the paint. James is good in transition, has a little bit of wiggle there, and can get on the rim. He is explosive in straight lines. James needs to tighten his handle in space.

… One of his biggest areas of improvement is from three, where he has cleaned up his mechanics – especially the release – and gathered his balance. James made 13 threes in six Peach Jam games at a 35 percent clip. He will need to finish better at the rim, especially in traffic. When playing as the primary initiator, he takes care of the ball with a better than 2.5:1 assists to turnover ratio at Peach Jam.”
