College basketball: SEC names Players of the Week

It was another exciting week of college basketball, and that was no different in the SEC. Three players stood out from the rest of the pack, as the SEC has just named its basketball Players of the Week.

Player of the Week: Mississippi State guard Iverson Molinar

Mississippi State went 2-0 on the week with wins over Georgia and Alabama, and junior guard Iverson Molinar was a major reason why. Against Georgia, Molinar played 34 minutes, scoring 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field, including one of his two three pointers. He also tallied seven assists, three rebounds, one block, and two steals.

Against Alabama on Saturday, Molinar played 35 minutes, scoring 24 points. He shot 8-of-17 from the field, and again made one of his two three pointers. He also grabbed six rebounds and had four assists and two steals in the 78-76 victory. Molinar has scored in double figures every game this season, being the only SEC basketball player to do so this year.

Co-Freshmen of the Week: Auburn forward Jabari Smith, Kentucky guard TyTy Washington

Auburn also went 2-0 on the week, picking up wins over Alabama and Ole Miss. Freshman forward Jabari Smith played a big role in those victories, averaging 33.5 minutes per game. Smith scored 25 points against Alabama, adding seven rebounds, one assists, four blocks, and two steals. he shot 8-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from three point range.

Against Ole Miss, Smith totaled 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including one of five three pointers. He also grabbed three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Freshman guard TyTy Washington broke out in a big way for Kentucky this week. He scored 15 points with four rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal against Vanderbilt to begin the week. But on Saturday, Washington was part of an offensive explosion. Against Tennessee, Washington scored a career-high 28 points, also adding five assists, two rebounds, and three steals. His 10-of-13 shooting led the Wildcats to an impressive 107-79 victory over Tennessee.
