Each week, On3’s Matt Zenitz will select coordinators of the week from each Power 5 conference as well as an offensive and defensive coordinator of the week from the Group of 5 level.

Here are the On3 coordinators of the week from Week One.

ACC

North Carolina OC Phil Longo
The buzz:
Thanks to Longo and the offense, the Tar Heels held on to beat Appalachian State 63-61 despite UNC’s defense surrendering nine touchdowns overall and 40 points in the fourth quarter. In the win, Longo’s offense produced the seventh-highest point total in North Carolina history, including the highest against an FBS opponent since 2015.

Big 12

TCU DC Joseph Gillespie
The buzz:
During TCU’s 38-13 win over Colorado, Gillespie’s defense held the Buffaloes to 273 yards and six points until a meaningless late touchdown with just more than a minute left in the game. Gillespie was the DC at Tulsa the past three seasons before being hired at TCU.

Big Ten

Ohio State DC Jim Knowles
The buzz:
Ohio State already is getting a return on investment with its new defensive coordinator. Knowles, who was hired after four seasons at Oklahoma State, limited Notre Dame to 253 yards and its lowest scoring output since 2018 during the No. 2 Buckeyes’ 21-10 win over the No. 5 Fighting Irish. Ohio State allowed an average of 31 points and 426 yards in six games against ranked opponents last season.

Pac-12

Arizona DC Johnny Nansen
The buzz:
In his first game as a college coordinator, Nansen limited San Diego State to 232 yards and one offensive touchdown during Arizona’s 38-20 win. The only San Diego State offensive touchdown came after an Arizona turnover that gave the Aztecs the ball at the Wildcats’ 32. Nansen was UCLA’s defensive line coach the past two seasons after six seasons as an assistant at USC.

SEC

Georgia OC Todd Monken
The buzz:
It wasn’t just the Bulldogs’ defense that performed at an elite level during No. 3 Georgia’s 49-3 rout of No. 11 Oregon. The offense did, too. Monken’s group accumulated 571 yards and scored seven touchdowns against a Ducks defense that includes at least a few potential early-round 2023 NFL Draft picks.

Group of 5 offensive coordinator

Appalachian State’s Kevin Barbay
The buzz:
Although App State lost to North Carolina, it wasn’t because of a lack of offense. During the 63-61 loss, Barbay’s offensive unit posted the second-highest point total in Mountaineers history against an FBS opponent, as well as the second-highest yardage total, too (649). As mentioned above, App State scored 40 points during the fourth quarter alone but failed to convert two late two-point conversions that could’ve forced overtime.

Group of 5 defensive coordinator

Old Dominion’s Blake Seiler
The buzz:
Old Dominion got a huge season-opening win over Virginia Tech despite getting just 245 yards from its offense. During the 20-17 upset, Seiler’s defense forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, and held the Hokies scoreless in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech’s final two drives ended with ODU interceptions.
