Texas holds top spot

The Texas Longhorns, which also earned the No. 1 spot in the D1Baseball preseason top 25, did its part to stay atop the top 25 rankings. Texas looked incredible in its first series of the year, a three-game sweep of the in-state Rice Owls, and both the pitching and hitting lived up to the hype and then some. Texas allowed just three runs all weekend, and its three starting pitchers — Pete Hansen, Tristan Stevens and Tanner Witt — allowed just one earned run collectively, while striking out 16 batters. Texas’ offense was led by Trey Faltine, who went 5-for-13 with a home run and six RBIs, while Silas Ardoin went 4-for-8 with a home run, five RBIs, three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

The top of the Big 12 showed up in a big way this weekend, as Texas maintained its No. 1 spot and Oklahoma State vaulted into the top five after stealing a series on the road at Vanderbilt. The Commodores, which were previously ranked No. 3 in D1Baseball’s preseason top 25, fell down to No. 5 while the Cowboys climbed up to No. 4 by taking the series. In what was overall a low-scoring series, the pitching looked solid and Oklahoma State’s Griffin Doersching stole the show offensively, going 5-for-10 with three doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Mississippi State fell from No. 4 to No. 7 in the latest installment of rankings after losing a home series to Long Beach State. The Dirtbags, which previously ranked No. 24, leapt all the way up to No. 12. In other West Coast headlines, Oregon State moved up from No. 18 to No. 14 after scoring 56 runs across four games, beating New Mexico twice and Gonzaga twice.

Only two new teams entered the D1Baseball top 25 this week: Liberty, which was previously unranked, moved up to No. 21 after winning two of three at Florida, and Maryland came in at No. 22 after sweeping Baylor on the road.
