Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott calls Mike McCarthy job security questions 'comical'

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had an incredulous reaction to questions about Mike McCarthy’s job security on Friday ahead of the wild card matchup versus Tampa Bay. Prescott told YahooSports’ Jori Epstein that the concerns are “comical, in a sense,” but he also made it clear that he understands how high the expectations are for his squad after last year’s first-round exit.
“Back-to-back 12 win [seasons] in y’all tell me how long and we’re talking about a guy’s job in jeopardy?” Prescott said. “That just shows you when you play for this organization what comes with it.”
Dallas is trying to win their first road playoff game in 30 years on Monday night. To get that done, the team is shutting out all outside noise.
“That’s why it’s important to create these walls around us, create this safe place in our locker room,” Prescott added. “Understanding what matters is the men that go out there and get in between the lines and put the work in throughout the week for us to go out and win.”
Another first-round loss in the playoffs would certainly set off the alarm bells in Dallas regarding McCarthy’s future, however, that’s not how Jerry Jones sees it.
This week, the Cowboys team owner commented on what impact a loss versus the Buccaneers would have on McCarthy’s job status, if any.
“No (it wouldn’t impact his status),” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “I don’t want to… No. That’s it. I don’t need to go into all the plusses or minuses. I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.”
Jones: ‘I have complete confidence in this coaching staff’
Jones gave the now 30-20 head coach a massive vote of confidence after finishing the year at 12-5.
“I can’t tell you how much confidence I’ve got in Mike and our coaching staff being on top of where we are with this team right now,” Jones continued. “I have complete confidence in this coaching staff. It’s outstanding.”

Mike McCarthy’s contract with Dallas isn’t up for another two years. The former Green Bay head coach signed a five-year deal to coach the Cowboys in 2020.
Over the summer, Jerry Jones addressed why the franchise hasn’t yet extended McCarthy’s contract after their playoff run ended at home versus 49ers.
“We’re in good shape,” Jones said in July. “We have years left on the contract. There are years past this one, that’s all I’ll say.”
He went on to clarify that he has complete faith in McCarthy to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. The contract extension simply hasn’t crossed his mind at this point because of how much time is remaining on it.
“I want to be real clear: He wouldn’t be sitting here today if I didn’t believe he was the man to lead this team to a Super Bowl,” Jones said at the time. “He wouldn’t be. And I have choices.”
Dallas faces Tom Brady and the Buccaneers on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET in Florida.
