About three months ago David Conner had very few college offers. As of today, Conner’s college recruitment is very different. In fact, it’s over. Conner is a Florida commit and no other school needs to even offer the 6-foot-6, 270-pound offensive tackle.

“I’m done, they can keep all of their offers,” Conner said.

Florida made Conner the proverbial offer he couldn’t refuse, and he took it. Conner’s recruitment took off this summer. He picked up offers from Jackson State, Alabama A&M, FAU and Syracuse between June 8 and June 9.

Florida International offered on June 14. June wrapped up with an offer from Liberty. July 26 saw Conner receive an offer from Arizona. Maryland offered on July 30.

On Aug. 7, Florida offered Conner. His decision was made nearly the second the offer came in. Conner’s mind was made up back on July 29.

Workout sold David Conner on Florida

That was before he held the offer from the Gators. David Conner enjoyed his workout with offensive line coach John Hevesy so much that it won him over. Conner saw a glimpse of how much better Hevesy could make him as a player. He felt he improved in the hour and a half workout Hevesy put him through on his unofficial visit.

“It was really the workout, and the way coach (John) Hevesy took me through the workout,” Conner said. “Coach Hevesy didn’t just work me out like the other schools did. He actually helped me and installed tools in me that I have. He gave me knowledge that I didn’t have. I left a better player. That really did it for me.”

For Conner, his commitment to the program was but a formality of waiting on the offer to be officially extended after the workout.

“After the workout, I knew before I left that this is where I’m going to be,” Conner said. “Once I got the offer, it was like I don’t need anything else. I went ahead and locked in as soon as I got the offer.”

Underrated and proud

David Conner feels he’s still underrated.

“My coach at my last school put my name out in a bad way and all of the coaches stopped talking to me,” Conner said. “I overcame that. I’m just excited to be in the position that I’m in. It’s crazy how things can change when you meet the right person.”

Conner’s move from Georgia landed him in Deerfield Beach, Fla. He immediately connected with Deerfield Beach High coach Jevon Glenn. Conner credits Glenn for his meteoric jump in college interest.

Moving into his senior year in high school and into college, Conner will carry the lack of interest with as fuel.

“I want to show that this should have happened years ago,” Conner said. “I just want to show that I’m ready. I’ve been ready. Now it’s time go and put it out on the field.”
