The 2024 Big 12 Baseball Tournament got underway on Tuesday, May 21st in Arlington, Texas. There, it will be played at Globe Life Field, the home of the Texas Rangers, and it will run through May 25th. The top 10 teams in the Big 12 this season made it to the tournament, and all of those teams are in the top 70 for RPI this season.

Kansas and Kansas State started things off with a pitching dual. When the Jayhawks were able to take a late lead on a sacrifice fly, the one-run deficit proved to be too much to overcome and Kansas earned its first win by a score of 2-1.

TCU and West Virginia just wrapped up the second game of the day with another tight battle. Horned Frogs pitchers Caedmon Parker and Braeden Sloan combined for 13 strikeouts to lead the team to a 5-2 victory against the Mountaineers.

No. 8 seed UCF needed extra innings to do so, but ended up pulling off a 6-5 upset of No. 8 Cincinnati in the third game of the day. The Bearcats added three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game at 5 and force extras, but Danny Neri’s home run in the 11th would prove to be the game-winning play.

The final game of the day came down to the wire before Texas Tech’s Cade McGee connected for a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning vs. Texas. The Red Raiders went on to secure the final three outs in the bottom of the inning to claim a 6-4 upset victory.

This is a double-elimination format, though. So all the teams that lost are still alive and will play each other on Wednesday with the loser going home.
