The Jacksonville Jaguars have requested to interview current Houston Texans quarterback coach Pep Hamilton, according to CBS’ Josina Anderson. Hamilton, a long-time NFL assistant who also served as Michigan’s pass game coordinator in 2017, is in the running for offensive coordinator in Jacksonville.

However, there could be a battle over Hamilton’s services. While the Jags and new head coach Doug Pederson are interested, he could very well stay in Houston.

The Texans are interviewing defensive coordinator Lovie Smith for the head job. If Smith gets it, Hamilton is the likely choice as offensive coordinator for the Texans.

Since getting his start in coaching at his alma mater, Howard University, in 1997, Pep Hamilton has coached for eight NFL teams.

He’s also coached at Stanford, Michigan and he served as the XFL DC Defenders’ head coach and general manager in 2020. Prior to joining the Texans, Hamilton spent one season with the L.A. Chargers.

Pep Hamilton has primarily coached quarterbacks and wide receivers, on top of passing game coordinator duties.

Name emerges as replacement for Josh Gattis in Michigan

Josh Gattis shocked the college football world by deciding to leave Michigan to join Mario Cristobal in Miami. Now, the Wolverines are left looking to replace one of the top assistants in the nation.

However, their search may not span far and wide. According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Michigan could look to quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss as Gattis‘ replacement.

“Another twist in the #Michigan situation. QBs coach Matt Weiss, who worked closely with Harbaugh last season, would be a strong option to replace Gattis,” revealed Rittenberg.

Moreover, Weiss has an extensive background in the NFL. Prior to joining Michigan last season, he was with the Baltimore Ravens from 2009-2020. In that time, Weiss held various roles — including running backs coach.

As you can see, Matt Weiss is plenty qualified. Time will tell if Jim Harbaugh slides him into Gattis‘ former role, or looks elsewhere for help.
