Kalon Gervin originally committed to Wisconsin after transferring from Michigan State. Friday night, the former Spartan announced a “change of plans.”

Instead of going to Madison, he’s heading to Lawrence.

Gervin posted a picture on Twitter announcing his commitment to Kansas Friday night. The announcement came more than a month after he committed to Wisconsin.

Gervin, a Detroit native, committed to Michigan State as part of the Class of 2018. He was a four-star prospect and the No. 3 recruit in the state of Michigan, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame were among the many teams to offer Gervin a scholarship out of high school.

He committed to Wisconsin in October as the Badgers work to replace their starting defensive backs, none of whom are expected to return next season. Instead, he’ll join Lance Leipold’s Kansas team.

At Michigan, Gervin had 44 tackles and a scoop-and-score over his three-year career in East Lansing. He was one of three Spartans to enter the transfer portal during the season, along with Chase Kline and Alex Okelo.

Kansas had a rough go this year, winning just two games. However, one of those wins came over Texas, 57-56, in Austin on Nov. 13.

Big 12 commissioner provides update on recruiting calendar

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said the NCAA Football Oversight Committee has discussed eliminating the early signing period or moving it to January to solve the recruiting calendar crunch, according to the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

The current recruiting schedule allows recruits to sign their letter of intent during the early signing period, which takes place on December 15, 2021, this offseason. The other option is to wait until the regular signing period, which opens on February 2, 2022, this offseason.

With the unprecedented movement on the coaching carousel this season, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is raising questions about the pros and cons of the recruiting calendar, which puts schools and coaches in a bind. The current system forces schools with a head coaching vacancy to fill the position within a short window or risk losing out in the early signing period.

The short time window also puts recruits in a bind when coaches leave a school where they have been committed. Many athletes prefer to sign early in order to enroll in January and partake in spring practice as an early enrollee, but in order to make the deadline, these athletes must reconsider their options over a short period of time.
