Four-Star QB Avery Johnson names top 3, sets commitment date

Four-star quarterback Avery Johnson of Maize (KS) High has narrowed his list to three schools– Washington, Oregon, and Kansas State.
The 6-foot-2, 175 pounder will also announce his commitment on July 5th at 3:00 CT on CBS Sports HQ.
Johnson went in depth on his finalists.
Washington
“I chose Washington as one of my finalists for many reasons,” Johnson said. “I love the offense that Coach DeBoer and Grubb brought to UW and I feel I could be a great fit in that system. On my visit, I had a great visit and got the chance to get to know the rest of the staff as well. I learned a lot about the program in the short amount of time I spent there. Go Dawgs.”
Oregon
“I chose Oregon as one of my finalists because I loved watching them play growing up,” Johnson said. “Also the relationships I had built with Coach Dillingham and Coach Lanning made it easy for me to put them in my top 3. I enjoyed being able to learn from Coach Dillingham on my visit and get to know the rest of the staff. Overall Oregon was a great experience for me. Sco Ducks.”

Kansas State
“I chose Kansas State as one of my finalists because they give me the opportunity to play for the state of Kansas, ” Johnson said. “ Coach Klien started recruiting me a long time ago and our relationship has only gotten stronger by the day. I’ve enjoyed being able to get to know everyone on staff and watch them build as a program. Go Cats.”
Avery Johnson Scouting Summary
“Three-sport star who is one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the 2023 cycle,” On3’s Director of Scouting Charles Power wrote. “Dynamic athlete for the position with speed and leaping ability that stacks up among wide receiver and defensive back prospects. An explosive mover both as an off-schedule playmaker and runner in the open field. Led his team to a state title appearance as a junior, passing for 2,550 yards and 20 touchdowns against six interceptions while rushing for 1,080 yards and 22 more scores. Makes plays against pressure in part due to his outstanding foot quickness. Has an elongated motion on Friday nights, but looks to have made progress in tightening things up prior to his senior season.”
“Showed improved passing skills in the camp setting, generating good velocity and spinning the ball the best we’ve seen. Tests as a strong athlete, running a 4.54 second 40-yard dash and jumping nearly 37 inches in the vertical. Doubles as a standout in basketball, where he has above-the-rim bounce and baseball.”
Johnson ranks as the No. 229 player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts for all four major recruiting sites. He also tabs in as the No.12 quarterback and the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas.
