Georgia-Vanderbilt delayed by torrential downpour with bases loaded

A scintillating second game between Georgia and Vanderbilt has been temporarily halted by weather, with a torrential downpour pausing things in the bottom of the fourth inning.

There will be plenty of drama on the line when the game resumes.

As the game went to a weather delay Georgia had the bases loaded with no outs in a 4-4 game. Vanderbilt had battled back from a four-run deficit to even things up shortly before the delay.

There was no shortage of interesting action in the first hour and a half of the game, either. That included some school records being broken, too.

On Saturday, to lead off the first inning against Vanderbilt, Georgia first baseman Corey Collins took a pitch to the body. It was his 21st hit by pitch of the season, setting a new school record.

Collins leads the SEC in hit by pitch, while he currently ranks tied for sixth nationally in that category. Suffice it to say, he does a good job of getting on base in unconventional ways as Georgia’s leadoff man.

Georgia would go on to take an early lead in the contest by plating two runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-run homer by Tre Phelps to center field.

The Dawgs would tack on two more in the bottom of the third with some nice work around the basepaths. That included an RBI single to center field, then a walk with the bases loaded to make it 4-0 Georgia.

However, Georgia ran into trouble in the top of the third inning when starting pitcher Charlie Goldstein had to exit the contest.

Goldstein fired a pitch to home plate and immediately pulled up.

He shook out his left arm vigorously before circling toward the dugout and making a quick motion with his hand. Coach Wes Johnson and a team trainer came out to check on him, and the decision was made to lift Goldstein from the game.

It was unclear exactly what the injury was.

Goldstein’s replacement was lifted an inning later after allowing a walk and an RBI double to center field, Vanderbilt’s first run of the game.

Christian Mracna took over on the mound and proceeded to give up a two-run home run and a solo shot in his first three pitches to even the contest at 4-4. He’d eventually get out of the inning without further damage, setting up the Georgia lineup in the bottom of the fourth.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases with a single to left field sandwiched by two hit by pitch. The game will resume, weather permitting, with the bases loaded and no outs for Georgia in the bottom of the fourth inning.
