Is No. 1 GG Jackson set to be UNC's first-ever decommitment?

On July 3, On3 broke the news that GG Jackson was looking to de-commit from North Carolina and reclassify into the 2022 class. I also placed an expert pick into On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) for Jackson to flip to South Carolina with 40 percent confidence.

In 2004 JR Smith committed to North Carolina, but he entered his name in the NBA Draft instead of enrolling in Chapel Hill. No other player in the modern era has de-committed from North Carolina, and no player has de-committed to enroll at another college.

Today, as I continue to gather intel, I raised my confidence level for GG Jackson to flip his commitment to South Carolina to 95 percent.

With this expert pick, On3’s RPM now gives South Carolina a 93.1 percent chance of landing 2023’s No. 1 overall player.

Jackson’s timeframe

While our certainty is behind the action, the timeframe is a bit more in question. When we first heard about Jackson’s intentions to reclassify, in May, our sources said Jackson would play in Peach Jam and then announce his decision. A couple of weeks ago, as this decision became more certain, sources told us the announcement would be made at Peach Jam.

Last weekend we heard Jackson would announce after Peach Jam again. Early this week, the word is before Peach Jam. We say all of that to say, this is something that has been in motion for a while and an announcement will happen this month.

Peach Jam will be in North Augusta, South Carolina July 17-24.
