Jordan Mincy detonates over first-half ejection, marches over to address AD before leaving

It was a strange outing today for Jacksonville University head coach Jordan Mincy. He had one of the weirder exits to a college basketball game you’ll ever see on Saturday, when Jacksonville was facing North Alabama.

The Jacksonville Dolphins were called for three defensive fouls in one possession less than five minutes into the game. And that set Mincy off. During a media timeout, he went over to the ASUN officials and gave them a piece of his mind. Whatever the officials said to justify the calls, that wasn’t good enough of an answer for Mincy.

That got him ejected. And once he was tossed, he went over to the North Alabama huddle and shook every player’s hand. He also went over to the Jacksonville AD in the stands, before heading to the locker room.

Without Mincy on the sidelines, Jacksonville still battled and pulled out the win, 67-63.

It’s important to note that the Dolphins rank among the top in the country in ejections and technical fouls. But that’s one of the stranger ejections you’ll ever see from a basketball game, no doubt about it.

Before joining Jacksonville as their head coach, Mincy spent time as an assistant at a number of colleges across the country including Florida, Louisiana Tech, Toledo, Charleston, and Kent State. He played his college basketball for Kent State from 2005-2009.

North Alabama only had one player in double digits, KJ Johnson led the team with 18 points. But they had a number of other players pump in nine points (Tim Smith, Jr., Jacari Lane, and Will Soucie). The game was close until the final few seconds, when Jacksonville had to nail a couple of free throws to seal the victory for good.

Jacksonville had four players score in double figures (Payne, Powell, McCray, and Workman). Stephon Payne III stuffed the stat sheet with a double-double for the Dolphins, 11 points and 10 rebounds. Robert McCray V led the team with 18 points and grabbed four rebounds in the win. Then, Bryce Workman had an outstanding performance, filling up the box score with 13 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

The Dolphins won, despite connecting on just 3-of-21 shots (14.3%) from beyond-the-arc. North Alabama drilled 7 of their 19 shots from three-point range (36.8%). With the win, the Dolphins improved to 13-12 overall and 4-7 in ASUN play. North Alabama dropped to 12-13 overall and 6-5 in ASUN play.
