Luke Doty reviews much-improved South Carolina offense in preseason camp

South Carolina quarterback Luke Doty is so far a second-fiddle for the Gamecocks. But with the sheer number of injuries to the position, including a situation where a graduate assistant was activated to start games under center, Doty has seen plenty of playing time. He’s appeared in 12 games across two seasons. So a frequent option at quarterback, but never the top one.

For the still-fairly-young Doty, that’s just fine. This fall, he’ll be taking snaps behind Spencer Rattler, one of the top quarterbacks in the country. According to Doty himself, Rattler and the entire offense have come along well this summer. A lot less sloppy and much more organized than the unit was in 2021 during head coach Shane Beamer’s first go-around.

At a recent press conference, Doty was asked about the unit as a whole, considering he’s one of the guys running the offense every day in practice. Here was his assessment:

Luke Doty on South Carolina’s offense

“Yeah, I think the biggest thing for both scrimmages was just the lack of turnovers on our side of the ball. You know, just making smart decisions know on all parts. You know, tight ends, wide receivers, running backs, like all all positions. Just playing really smart football — good, clean football.”

Players are engaged and focused. Guys are getting their jobs done with very few missed assignments, per one of their signal callers. He also touted how much cleaner the offensive line played.

“You know, offensive linemen there. I don’t think there were many holding calls or any pre or post-snap penalties that would have really affected us. I’m sure there were some here and there. But if you look go back and look at, you know, last year’s scrimmages, even in fall camp, the the turnover numbers were high, the penalty numbers were high.”

Still plenty of progress to be made. But for South Carolina, expect a more polished group on the offensive side of the football.

“So just to see kind of, you know, those numbers go down, I think that was a good indication of where we were, you know. Or, where we are offensively. And obviously there’s things we need to clean up. But, you know, we feel like we’re in a good spot and we’re only just gonna — we’re gonna keep getting better.”
