Khamauri Rogers committed in June. Chris Graves and Trequon Fegans in July. It is Markeith Williams’ turn in August. Four 4-star defensive backs have committed to the Miami Hurricanes in just under two months.

Manny Diaz turned this one around in the spring, then closed the deal in the summer.

The 6-foot-1, 170 pound safety out of Orlando Evans had Alabama, Florida and Ohio State as his top three schools about six months ago, but the more Miami got Williams on campus, the higher they moved up his list.

Earlier this week, Williams made the decision to commit to Miami over Nebraska and Ohio State.

The vibe was right at Miami for Markeith Williams

“I visited Miami three times and the vibe is fun and there is high energy everywhere,” Williams said.

Williams couldn’t see himself anywhere else. He took his visits over the summer and it hit him a couple of days ago that he needed to be in Coral Gables.

“I made my decision three days ago on Sunday. Miami is a great school, it has great facilities and it has a lot of tradition. I know I want to be a Hurricane.”

When many think about the history at Miami, defensive stars come to mind. That is no different for Williams.

“It feels legendary to follow in the footsteps of Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Ray Lewis and so many others that played at Miami,” Williams said. “Thinking about those guys makes it that much better to call myself a Hurricane.”

New defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, known by most as T-Rob, played a big role in this decision. The two have had numerous zoom calls, countless conversations over the phone, a few one-on-one calls, and all that led to a special connection.

“I feel like I have been knowing T-Rob all my life. We have that kind of bond. He is a great defensive coach and I am excited about playing for one of the best defensive coaches.”

Markeith Williams is an all-around safety

“Markeith Williams has an all-around skill set at safety,” said National Recruiting Analyst Charles Power. “He’s shown the ability to play man coverage on the outside or in the slot and has range when playing deep in one and two-high looks.

“Williams plays fast – he’s very physical and throws his body around. The combination of cover skills and physicality bode well when you’re projecting forward. He’ll need to continue adding some weight, as he was under 170 pounds this spring. With that said, Williams still plays with a lot of strength for his size. It’s also encouraging to see his continued improvement this spring.”

The quartet of defensive backs Diaz and the Hurricane staff has put together is quite impressive.

“Manny Diaz is assembling a strong defensive back class in 2022 with Williams being the latest,” Power added. “We’re particularly high on cornerback Chris Graves (no. 105 in the On300). Pairing Williams and Graves with On300 corner Trequon Fegans and Khamauri Rogers gives the Hurricanes one of the better secondary classes in the country.”
