Former Ole Miss and current Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Matt Corral was placed on injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury. The decision, effectively, ended his rookie season. Panthers coach Matt Rhule further explained that decision.

“Obviously a disappointing time for him,” Matt Rhule said. “I hate to speak for guys but Matt’s a tough kid. I know how much he wanted to play, he loves this game.”

“He’ll be very, very, very much involved both in his rehab but also still involved in his growth as a QB we wanted him to compete this year but we also knew the best long-term strategy for him would be to really have a chance to soak and we didn’t want it to be on IR. He’ll make the most of it.”

Matt Rhule is going to hope that Matt Corral’s growth happens off the field and in the classroom so that he is fully prepared when he takes the field next season.

However, due to the severity of the injury, it was unlikely that Matt Corral would be able to physically return this season. Because of that, the Panthers put him on IR to avoid using up one of their roster spots. As it stands now, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and PJ Walker are all quarterbacks on the active roster. Matt Rhule, potentially, could leave all three quarterbacks on the roster now. However, it’s rare that a team carries more than three quarterbacks on its active roster.

Matt Corral suffered his injury in the Panthers’ preseason game against the Patriots.
