Following a film room incident where Cale Gundy used a word typed on an iPad multiple times, he resigned from his role with Oklahoma football. After multiple statements from the school and its alumni base, the story became more clear on why the wide receiver coach willingly left the program.

During a recent interview with ESPN, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy weighed in on his brother Cale’s situation and more. While he understands the move, Gundy also makes it clear that their bond as brother in not changing.

“I think the thing to do is six months from now to call him and ask him,” Mike Gundy said. “We have talked more the last week than we have in the last year. I just want him to know that I’m here for him, so we haven’t gotten into what all happened. There will be a time for that, but he understands sometimes that life’s not fair.”

Despite the details which came out, Mike Gundy makes the case that Cale’s actions in that moment do not define him as a person. That sentiment was echoed in the response by several of his former players.

“We’ve always tried to stay away from that because we didn’t want to put our families under the microscope more than they already were, but he will have plenty of options to do whatever he wants to do. He’s a good person,” said Mike Gundy.

Mike Gundy addresses past controversy

Mike Gundy is no stranger to controversy himself, always willing to provide honest thoughts when asked about certain issues. In one of the most well-documented topics regarding his beliefs, people pointed to a shirt he wore supporting a media outlet which promoted controversial ideas.

“I put a T-shirt on and look what happened,” Mike Gundy said. “I was amazed at some of the reaction, but I know who I am, where I come from. I know my feelings, what my job is, what my players mean to me and how I feel about people. Cale is the same way. He knows who he is. Now, his heart is broken because they took away part of his life, but he’s going to be fine.”

As Mike Gundy continues coaching at Oklahoma State with success on the field as well as the recruiting trail, the misstep forced him to come together with his players in order to discuss the issue head-on.
