Oklahoma’s top-25 football recruiting class has taken its first major hit, as Mustang (Okla.) four-star quarterback Jaden O’Neal announced he has decommitted from the Sooners on Thursday night.

O’Neal had been pledged to OU since June 2024, when he chose them over more than 20 other reported offers. He transferred into Mustang this offseason from California’s Narbonne High, with the expectation that he would sign with the Sooners in December.

But with Oklahoma’s offensive staff heavily pursuing other targets, including four-star Bowe Bentley, O’Neal is now reopening his options. He is fresh off a midweek official visit to Florida State and ultimately decommitted from the Sooners right before his OV to Norman.

He ranks as the nation’s No. 234 overall recruit and No. 16 quarterback in the 2026 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

OU’s class now sits at No. 22 nationally with only nine commitments heading into the final visit weekend of June.

O’Neal has been one of California’s most prolific quarterbacks

After transferring from another school between his sophomore and junior seasons, O’Neal missed the first seven games of Narbonne’s 2024 season due to transfer rules. But he ultimately led the Gauchos to a Los Angeles City Section Open Division championship in December.

In the team’s 75-37 win over San Pedro in the city title game, O’Neal completed 14 of 21 passes for 396 yards with six passing touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown.

In eight games for Narbonne, the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder threw for 1,798 yards and 16 scores while completing better than 71 percent of passes.

That followed a sophomore campaign at Newport Harbor where he finished with 2,475 passing yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 61% of his attempts.
