There have been echoes of Eli Holstein‘s name around the country over the weekend after he backed off his longtime Texas A&M pledge ahead of the weekend.

Yet again, the 2023 quarterback dominoes have been shaken up and one of the nation’s top passers is back on the board.

There are some teams that have been courting Holstein even before he reopened his recruitment. That includes the Tide, which hosted the four-star state championship-winning quarterback for an unofficial visit earlier in March. Another school’s head coach touched base with Holstein as early as Saturday morning.

For now, Holstein’s focus is on getting back to the field.

The No. 9 quarterback in the On3 Consensus took January and February off from throwing after helping Zachary (La.) capture a Class 5A Louisiana state title capping a 15-0 season in the process. Holstein, who measured in at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds at Texas A&M in January, went 13-of-30 through the air for 257 yards and two touchdowns and was the championship game’s Most Outstanding Player.

Holstein passed for more than 3,200 yards and 44 total touchdowns in 2021 with 500 more rushing yards. He was the Louisiana Sportswriters Class 5A Player of the Year and MaxPreps Player of the Year in the state.

On Sunday, Holstein moved from the weight room back to the field and threw his first pass to kick off his offseason regimen. This is the first spring the four-star quarterback isn’t playing basketball or participating in 7-on-7 and has his sights set on returning to the Elite 11 regional in Las Vegas later this spring.

Holstein notched impressive marks as an underclassman at the Elite 11 in Indianapolis last year. That includes a 4.69-second 40; a 38-inch vertical; a 4.44-second agility shuttle along with a 42-foot power ball toss.

Holstein has improved testing scores in a handful of those categories and is training to set new records this spring.

“If he tests like that, he’ll break the all-time record,” his father told On3. “He’s training to break the record.”

Holstein is tabbed as the No. 101 overall player regardless of position in the On3 Consensus.
