No. 5 OU (5-0, 1-0) dominated Kent State (1-4) on Saturday in Norman, winning 44-0.
OU was led by sophomore quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., who started in place of the injured John Mateer. Hawkins totaled four touchdowns on the day, throwing three and running for another. He was 14 of 24 for 162 yards through the air. He also ran for 33 yards.
Here is how it all went down on Saturday for Oklahoma.
OU vs Temple game recap
- Defining moment: DE R Mason Thomas’ strip sack and DT Gracen Halton’s scoop-and-score. OU finally got its first turnover of the season in the third quarter. Thomas forced the fumble and Halton scored it. Safety Jaydan Hardy also had a turnover for the Sooners, with an interception in the third quarter.
- MVP: WR Isaiah Sategna. The Arkansas transfer wide receiver was stellar for the Sooners. He totaled four receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned five punts for 97 yards, helping flip the field position multiple times. He averaged 19 yards per return.
- Stat to know: The OU defense held Kent State to just 129 total yards, including only 17 yards on the ground. The 17 rushing yards is the least by an opponent since 2009 when the Sooners held Baylor to 6 rushing yards.
- Injuries: WR Keontez Lewis left the game on a stretcher early in the first quarter after running into the wall in the North end zone. OU later released the following statement: “Initial evaluation of Keontez Lewis by OU sports medicine staff proved promising. Out of an abundance of caution, he has been sent offsite for additional testing.”
- Up Next: The Sooners will head to Dallas for the Red River Rivalry to face No. 9 Texas on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC. The Longhorns will be coming off a loss, losing to Florida on the road Saturday.
