Rich Rodriguez discusses plans for future roster builds

West Virginia looked at all levels when filling out the roster after Rich Rodriguez took over the program.
That extends to transfers at every level, junior college players and high school options.
Transfers ended up being a big part of the formula this past year with over 50 coming from that avenue and that doesn’t even factor into the junior college players in the mix.
“We had a lot of spots to fill, and we just found the best players we could to fit not just our program but our culture as well,” he said on his weekly radio show.
But that isn’t expected to be the formula moving forward as Rodriguez said that they signed more transfers this past off-season than they will in the future.
“We’ll sign more high school guys. We already have 20 some commitments for next year so we’ll be more heavy into high school guys than portal guys in the future,” he said.
The culture is a huge aspect when it comes to building a program and Rodriguez demands that from the way they practice and prepare to how they go about their business.
“And we have to stick to that every day, you have to live it,” he said.
That’s more challenging in the first year anywhere but especially when you consider all of the roster turnover that the Mountaineers dealt with from a season ago with almost 80 new players on the roster. But that won’t be as much of a transition next year because it won’t be an entire team that has to learn it just the new ones.
“We’ll have to bring in a bunch of new ones next year because we have 30 some seniors,” he said.
