SEC releases Week 5 Players of the Week honors

There were multiple intriguing matchups inside the SEC in Week 5. Alabama stayed undefeated by defeating Ole Miss, Georgia shut out Arkansas, Kentucky upset Florida, and there were many other intriguing games on the weekend slate. Following the action, the SEC has releases its Week 5 Players of the Week.

Week 5 SEC Players of the Week: Offensive honors

Offensive Players of the Week: Alabama RB Brian Robinson, Mississippi State QB Will Rogers, Auburn QB Bo Nix

Alabama came away with a 42-21 victory over Ole Miss, and Brian Robinson was a big reason behind the win. In the win, Robinson had a career high 171 yards and four touchdowns behind 36 carries. Robinson is one of nine players in Alabama history to rush for four touchdowns in a game, and he also converted eight first downs in the win.

In Mississippi State’s 26-22 upset victory over Texas A&M, Will Rogers threw for 408 yards and had a three touchdowns, which tied a career high. It is the second time Rogers has thrown for 400 yards and three touchdowns in a game this season, and he is the only SEC quarterback to do so. In the win, Rogers had completions with nine receivers and had five 20+ yard completions. He also completed 46 passes.

Bo Nix was benched last week for Auburn, but he bounced back with a good performance in Auburn’s close victory over LSU. Nix threw for 255 yards and a touchdown, also rushing for 74 yards and a score. Auburn came back from a 13 point deficit to beat LSU. Nix led Auburn on 75 and 92 yard touchdown drives in the comeback.

Offensive Lineman of the Week: Tennessee OT Cade Mays

Tennessee had 683 yards in its 62-24 win at Missouri. Right tackle Cade Mays was a big reason behind the strong offensive performance. Mays did not allow a single pressure in the game and had no penalties. Tennessee also had 458 rushing yards and scored 28 points in the first quarter.

SEC Defensive honors

Defensive Players of the Week: Kentucky LB Jacquez Jones, Alabama LB Will Anderson

Kentucky earned a huge upset victory over Florida behind a strong defensive performance. Jacquez Jones had a big game in the win with nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hurry, and a game saving pass breakup. Jones came up with the pass breakup in the end zone with 18 seconds left to secure the victory. Kentucky held Florida to 171 rushing yards and 382 total offensive yards, both well below the Gators’ season averages.

Will Anderson also played a big role in Alabama’s strong defensive performance over the high powered Ole Miss offense. Anderson had 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, nine tackles, and two quarterback hurries. Anderson helped Alabama hold Ole Miss to just 21 points, 31.7 points below its season average.

Defensive Lineman of the Week: Georgia DL Devonte Wyatt

Georgia’s defense again showed up in a big way against Arkansas. The Bulldogs earned their second consecutive shutout in the 37-0 win. Devonte Wyatt racked up six tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Georgia allowed just 162 total yards and nine first downs. The Bulldogs were led by a strong performance from the defensive front.

SEC Special Teams/Freshman honors

Special Teams Players of the Week: Vanderbilt K Joe Bulovas, Kentucky DE Josh Paschal

Vanderbilt finally got back in the win column with a 30-28 victory over UConn. Kicker Joe Bulovas nailed a game winning 31-yard field goal with three seconds left on the clock to secure the win. Bulovas made each of his three field goal attempts, also making all three extra points.

Josh Paschal blocked a field goal that Kentucky returned for a touchdown against Florida. At the time, Kentucky trailed 10-7, so the play gave Kentucky a key lead in the close game. Paschal also had seven tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in the win.

Freshmen of the Week: Tennessee RB Len’Neth Whitehead, Auburn RB Jarquez Hunter

Tennessee pounded Missouri on the road, and Len’Neth Whitehead had 76 yards on nine carries in his second career SEC game. Whitehead also had a ten yard reception. Overall, Tennessee had 458 rushing yards in the big victory over Missouri.

Jarquez Hunter had six carries for 65 yards and a touchdown in Auburn’s comeback victory over LSU. 53 of Hunter’s 65 rushing yards came on Auburn’s game winning touchdown drive. 44 of those yards came on a single rush and he capped the drive with a one-yard score. He leads FBS rushers with 10.6 yards per carry.
