The battle for four-star Gardendale (Ala.) defensive lineman Kelby Collins is coming down to its final weeks.

With a decision likely expected before the end of the month, two programs are duking it out to land the No. 60 prospect in the On3 Consensus, according to Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons.

“Based on what I’m hearing, Alabama and Florida are battling this one out,” Simmons said. “A decision could come as soon as mid-August. But nothing is locked in, nothing is set yet. He’s in communication with both coaching staffs. There has to be some confidence in Florida because he was there again, back for a second time this summer. He likes the new coaching staff; he sees an opportunity there. And Collins has always been open to leaving his home state.”

Collins was scheduled to visit the Crimson Tide twice last week before heading to Florida over the weekend for an unofficial visit. But he never made either trip to Tuscaloosa and did end up in Gainesville. The Gators have been pushing hard for him in recent months, now getting him on campus twice since June.

Alabama still remains the heavy favorite in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM), but Billy Napier and Co. have pulled off a few late shockers since he took over in December. Could Kelby Collins be the latest?

Kelby Collins Scouting Summary

“Highly productive, big-framed defensive lineman who could play a number of spots along the front. Measured at 6-foot-5, 278 pounds with a 6-foot-6 wing-span prior to his junior season. Has been a dominant high school defensive lineman for a few seasons. Totaled 20 tackles for loss and 12 sacks as a junior. Frequently in opposing backfields, using quick and strong hands to disengage from blocks.

… A fluid mover who closes quickly behind the line of scrimmage. A strong run defender and chases down plays from the back side. Could line up as a big defensive end or move inside at the next level pending on his size. Lacks high end length for the position relative to other highly-ranked peers.”
