Sometimes players just fly under the radar. There is no rhyme or reason for it; they can be hidden in plain sight, putting up huge numbers against good competition and simply sliding through the cracks. Troy McKoy is the No. 134 player in the 2024 On3 150. So he is not entirely under the radar.

The 6-foot-4 guard was named the runner-up for the conference Player of the Year in the Elite Prep League. McKoy averaged 21.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and shot 39 percent from three.

“I’m a big guard, and I use my body to play physically and get to the basket,” McKoy told On3. “I can also shoot the three or use my pull-up game to score as well. I’m understanding how to be a combo guard this season. I’ve always been able to score; this season, I have the ball in my hands, setting up my teammates and making reads.”

The one thing about players who fly under the radar, they do not stay there forever. In the first round of the Elite Prep League playoffs, McKoy finished with playoff-high 32 points. He added 13 rebounds and two steals in the win.

“I watch a lot of Luka Doncic and Bradley Beal,” McKoy said. “Their pace, how they can score and facilitate, and their whole game. Luka can rebound too, and I like to do that.”

McKoy talks recruitment

“Right now, I just have a Hampton offer,” McKoy said. “We’ve heard from UMass, South Carolina, and Wake Forest some too.”

“My dad and BJ McKie (Wake Forest) both played at South Carolina,” McKoy said. “They talk a good bit, and I know that they’ve been winning down there.”

McKoy talks South Carolina

McKoy’s dad, Troy McKoy, Sr., played at South Carolina from 1988 to 1993. He was on the team as the program moved from the Metro Conference to the SEC. McKoy averaged 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in his senior season for the Gamecocks.

“My dad played at South Carolina back in the early 90s. He tells me about how it was back then and the coaches he played for. My dad lets me know they play a fast-paced game, and they play hard down there. He loved his time when he was there; it was a brotherhood. All the people he met there and played with he still talks with to this day.”

In his words

“I’m going to be looking at what school is the best fit for me,” McKoy said. “A place where I can come in and earn my spot, which I feel like I can do early. I’ll be looking for the right environment where I’m comfortable both on and off the court. I’m comfortable playing on or off the ball, so whatever the coach wants me to do where I fit the best.”

“Right now, I’m in the 2024 class, but if something comes along as a 2023, I’m open to having that conversation if the fit makes sense.”
