Texas A&M commits Rueben Owens, Dalton Brooks named Mr. Texas Football Finalists

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) have announced the top 10 finalists for the Mr. Texas Football High School Player of the Year Award, presented by Kroger. Texas A&M five-star running back commit Rueben Owens and four-star safety commit Dalton Brooks, along with multiple targets, have been named to the list.

“Mr. Texas Football annually recognizes the most outstanding high school football player in the state of Texas. Each week, fans are given a chance to vote for the player of the week on TexasFootball.com. In December, 10 finalists will be announced and fans can then cast their votes as to who should be named Mr. Texas Football. The winner of the 2022 Mr. Texas Football Award presented by Kroger will be announced prior to the TaxAct Texas Bowl, which will be played at NRG Stadium on December 28, 2022.”

Owens, fresh off his Texas A&M pledge, is in line for the award, and it comes to no ones surprise.

Owens and Brooks are production machines

In 11 games played in his senior season, Owens has rushed for 1,781 yards and 25 touchdowns. That comes on only 213 carries, meaning he is averaging 8.4 yards per carry and 161.9 yards per game.

Owens’ counterpart on this list, Dalton Brooks also cracked this list due to his offensive production.

Although Brooks is committed to as a defensive back, at Shiner, he is also the team’s leading offensive producer at running back.

In his senior season, Brooks rushed for 2,353 yards and 37 touchdowns. His efforts have pushed Shiner to a current 11-2 record, getting them to the fourth round of Texas High School Playoffs.

Owens and Brooks are the only Texas A&M flavor to crack the list. 2024 athlete targets Dre’lon Miller, out of Silsbee (Texas) High and Terry Bussey, out of Timpson (Texas) High made the lists as finalists.

Rueben Owens On3 Scouting Summary

The most productive rusher in the 2023 cycle. Dominates mid-level competition, rushing for nearly 3,000 yards and 46 touchdowns as a junior. Extremely efficient, rushing for over 12 yards per carry. Pairs very good long-speed with vision and contact balance. Has run sub-11.0 second marks in the 100 meters and carries that speed over to the field. Regularly pulls away from the competition. Bounces off tackles at the second level. Spins out of arm tackles. Does not give up on runs. Has also shown advanced ball skills as a pass catcher in the 7-on-7 setting.

Does not appear to have a big frame at 5-foot-11 and under 200 pounds. Will need to add mass to his lower body to optimize leg drive and durability. Can improve his lateral agility as he gears down to cut at times. Older for the class, turning 19 years old in the middle of his senior season.

Dalton Brooks On3 Scouting Summary

Versatile athlete who is one of the more dominant small-town players from the state of Texas in recent years. Stars for back-to-back state champion Shiner High as a running back and safety. Rushed for over 2,600 yards and 39 touchdowns at over 10 yards per carry as a junior. Doubles as a strong track athlete, posting good numbers in several events including the 100 meters (11.15 seconds), the long jump (22-10.25 feet) and the triple jump (45-7 feet).

Has a leaner athletic build that has room to fill out nicely at the next level. Smooth runner with easy closing speed to ball carriers. Willing to come downhill and strike as well as cover sideline to sideline in the back half. Flashes the long speed and change of direction necessary to play in the secondary at a top tier collegiate program or as a running back. Will need to adjust to the speed of the game coming from a lower classification, but has the physical tools and inherent skills to make an impact, perhaps early on.
