Texas A&M saw a surprising departure on Wednesday morning as Texas A&M tight end Baylor Cupp entered the transfer portal, per On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Cupp, who was a four-star recruit and the No. 1 tight end in the country in the 2019 cycle per the On3 Consensus, had struggled with injuries throughout his Texas A&M career. As a freshman, he suffered an ankle injury during fall camp and received a medical redshirt. As a sophomore, he was once again injured during fall camp and missed the 2020 season. Cupp finally saw the field in his redshirt sophomore season, playing in ten games and making one start against Praise View A&M, though he recorded no statistics.

Cupp was a talented recruiting coming out of Brock (Tex.) High. As a senior, he recorded 20 catches for 492 yards and six touchdowns, helping lead Brock to a state semifinal appearance, where the Eagles fell to Malakoff. As a junior, Cupp recorded 10 catches for 451 yards and six touchdowns, helping Brock to a state championship appearance, where the Eagles fell to Rockdale. He was named an Under Armour All-American as a senior and named to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Tops in Texas Second Team.

Cupp’s entry into the portal leaves the Aggies with four scholarship tight ends on the roster, including sophomore Blake Smith, senior Max Wright, second-year freshman Fernando Garza and true freshman Jake Johnson, who was rated as the No. 1 tight end in the country in the On3 Consensus in the 2022 class. The Aggies also signed four-star Donavan Green out of Dickinson and four-star Theodor Melin Öhrström out of Clearwater (Fla.) Academy International. Green finished as the No. 6 tight end in the 2022 cycle, while Öhrström, who reclassified from the 2023 cycle and originally hails from Sweden, rates as the No. 14 tight end in the On3 Consensus.

Cupp is the second Aggie player to enter the portal this week as former five-star wide receiver Demond Demas announced his intentions to enter the portal on Monday. Demas was arrested by police in connection with an assault family violence charge stemming from an incident which later led to more charges and an additional assault.

During his Tuesday press conference, Jimbo Fisher deflected a question about Demond Demas’ current status with the program and legal situation.

“No, we can’t comment on anything going on with Demond and where he’s at,” said Fisher, quickly moving to the next question.

Demas reportedly knocked out multiple teeth of his victim, whose family reportedly assaulted Demas in the coming days afterward. Immediately following the incident, reports suggested the Demas was no longer with the Texas A&M program.
