Texas Longhorns starting quarterback Casey Thompson has entered the transfer portal, as first reported by Inside Texas.

Thompson’s decision came after quarterback Quinn Ewers, the On3 Consensus No. 1 recruit in the 2021 class, announced he intended to transfer from Ohio State to Texas on December 12. Ewers made it official on December 15, signing with the Longhorns.

Adding Ewers to the Texas quarterback room left many wondering if Thompson or Hudson Card would enter the portal. Thompson, a junior, answered that question Friday. He took over as the starter in the third game, after Card struggled in a blowout loss at Arkansas.

The first start for Thompson was an impressive one; he was 15-of-18 for 164 yards and two touchdowns in a blowout win over Rice. Thompson threw for 303 yards and five TDs the next week in a 70-35 rout of Texas Tech.

He also threw five TD passes in a loss to Oklahoma and six in a loss to Kansas.

For the season, he was 165-of-261 for 2,113 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He exits Texas with 2,422 career passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Thompson had just 29 passing attempts before this season at Texas. He also rushed for 210 yards and five TDs in his three seasons.

This the second time Thompson has entered the transfer portal. He first entered the portal in December 2018 before deciding to stay in Austin.

Thompson will have two years of eligibility at his new school.

Texas remains in good shape at the position headed into the spring. Card and Ewers are joined by redshirt freshman Charles Wright and early enrollee Maalik Murphy. Card is the lone quarterback with game experience, though. Card was 52-of-86 for 595 yards and five touchdowns in eight games.
