Texas Longhorns quarterback Casey Thompson has entered the transfer portal according to Inside Texas with On3’s Matt Zenitz confirming. This will be his second appearance in the portal while in college.

Thompson finished the season with 2,113 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions on the season. He split time with freshman Hudson Card early in the season before being inserted as the full-time starter before the Rice game.

Thompson was the longtime backup behind now Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger. He burst onto the scene at the end of the 2020 season in the Alamo Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes.

With the introduction of Quinn Ewers from the transfer portal, the Longhorns’ quarterback room began to fill up. On3 Consensus four-star Maalik Murphy signed his national letter of intent on Wednesday as well. Card and freshman Charles Wright will be the other two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster entering the 2022 season.

“Right now, I’m not going to comment on it right now,” Casey’s father, Charles, told Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman after the news broke. “We just feel it’s in his best interest to seek something else.”

Coming out of high school, Thompson was rated a four-star quarterback on the On3 Consensus. Being a rare Texas player to come out of the state of Oklahoma, the quarterback was being recruited heavily by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

He decided to head across the Red River to Austin instead. Funny enough, Thompson’s best performance of the season came against the Sooners in his only Red River Shootout appearance. The Longhorns got out to a large lead thanks to the play of Thompson before losing on a last-minute touchdown from Oklahoma.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian talks about Quinn Ewers

Although Sarkisian will likely say there is going to be a quarterback battle going forward, Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers seems to be the future for Texas. One of the highest-rated recruits in history, the Southlake Carroll product will be deemed as the guy to bring the program back to life.

Sarkisian talked about Ewers during his early signing day press conference on Wednesday. He described how many different throws Ewers can make and how hard the quarterback has worked over the past year.

“I think Quinn, like Malik, has great arm talent,” Sarkisian said. “Both guys have big arms. They are big guys, which is really helpful. They have the unique ability to throw the ball from different arm angles, throw it without their feet perfectly set, make throws off schedule down the field, and create opportunities for you, not just in the short field but down the field, explosive plays. He’s put in a lot of work to get to this point. Hopefully, we do a good job to continue to develop him and get him to where he wants to be.”
