Dean Smith took over the North Carolina Tar Heels Basketball program while it was under probation and the previous coach, Frank McGuire, had been forced to resign. Initially, it was a difficult transition for the Tar Heels program. However, by the 1966-67 season, Dean Smith had found a formula for success at North Carolina, going to three straight Final Fours. In the 1981-82 season, Smith finally got over the hump and won his first of two National Championships.
