Recapping Friday’s NCAA Tournament games

Most of the higher seeds won in the first day of the women’s NCAA Tournament. The only team to be upset was Louisville, falling 71-69 to Middle Tennessee. The loss by the Cardinals means that we will not have a matchup with LSU star Hailey Van Lith facing off against her former team in the second round.

While the rest of the higher seeds won, not all of the victories were easy. No. 6 seed Nebraska escaped with a 61-59 victory over No. 11 seed Texas A&M. Alexis Markowski and Logan Nissley each scored 16 points for the Cornhuskers in the win.

North Carolina also had a close call, building a huge lead, before hanging on for a 59-56 victory to advance to face the top-seeded Gamecocks.

Alabama vs. Florida State was also decided by single digits. The Crimson Tide held on for an 82-74 victory to advance to face No. 1 seed Texas. Iowa State and vs. Maryland was also competitive, with the Cyclones coming out on top 93-86.

LSU did end up winning by double digits against Rice, but it was far from an easy game. The Tigers led by only three points at halftime, before escaping with a 70-60 win.

As for the other matchups on Friday in the NCAA Tournament, No. 1 seeds South Carolina and Texas, No. 2 seeds Stanford and Ohio State, No. 3 seed Oregon State, No. 4 seeds Virginia Tech and Kansas State, No. 5 seeds Baylor and Colorado and No. 7 seed Duke all cruised to double digit victories.

The women’s NCAA Tournament continues on Saturday with the rest of the teams getting underway, including Caitlin Clark and Iowa and JuJu Watkins and USC.
