2025 MLB Draft: Ethan Frey contract details revealed for Houston Astros third-round pick

Just over a week after being selected 95th overall in the first round by the Houston Astros in the 2025 MLB Draft, outfielder Ethan Frey has agreed to terms on his pro contract. He’ll receive $997,500 — which is over value for the pick ($803,900), per Spotrac.
Frey was a member of two National Championship teams in his three seasons at LSU. The Rosepine, LA native compiled 257 career at-bats, hitting for a .304 average with 19 doubles, 13 home runs, a .420 OBP% and a .641 SLG%.
He was named to the 2025 NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team after posting a .391 on-base percentage in the Men’s College World Series with two doubles and four drawn walks. One of his best performances of the season came in the Baton Rouge Regional Championship win over Little Rock, where he went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, one home run, four RBI, two walks and two runs scored.
“One of the more imposing hitters in college baseball at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Frey is built to hit for power,” his MLB.com scouting report reads. “He’s strong and has a quick right-handed stroke to go with an affinity to driving the ball in the air, a combination that allows him to hit balls out of any part of the park. While he lacks a long track record, he’s a patient hitter who has had success this year against both lefties and righties and all types of pitches.”

Frey was one of nine LSU players selected in MLB Draft
Frey now joins a Houston Astros organization heralded as one of the most well ran in all of Major League Baseball, as it has not posted a sub-.500 record in a 162-game season since 2014. The outfielder was one of a few notable college names selected by the Astros, joining Southern Miss second baseman Nick Monistere, Arkansas outfielder Justin Thomas and Texas right-handed pitcher Grayson Saunier.
“The fact that Frey has spent the majority of his college career as a DH belies his athleticism,” his report continued. “A former catcher and dual-threat quarterback in high school, he has solid speed and had arm strength to match before he injured his shoulder. He should be able to play right field in pro ball and could merit a look in center.”
The Louisiana native was one of nine members of the 2025 LSU National Championship team selected in the 2025 MLB Draft.
