49ers rookie DT Alfred Collins forces critical fumble at the goal line vs. Rams

San Francisco 49ers rookie defensive tackle Alfred Collins made the potential game-saving play in Thursday’s Week 5 road contest against the Los Angeles Rams. Collins forced a fumble of Rams running back Kyren Williams at the goal line with 1:02 remaining in the game.
At the time, the 49ers were clinging to a 23-20 lead over their NFC West rivals. Los Angeles marched down the field and had the chance to take the lead late and force San Francisco’s offense to answer. Collins had other ideas.
Collins, the 49ers’ 2025 second-round selection out of Texas, came up big at a time where the 49ers desperately needed someone to make a play. While it perhaps saved the game for San Francisco, it hasn’t proved to be the game-winning play — yet.
After the 49ers went three-and-out on the ensuing drive, the Rams took the ball at the 50-yard line with 42 seconds left on the clock, needing only a field goal to tie. Joshua Karty converted his 48-yard field goal attempt, sending the game to overtime.

49ers, Rams go to overtime in Week 5
And so, we have free football at SoFi Stadium. Both teams want this one badly, as the winner will improve to 4-1 and sit atop the division. If the 49ers are able to pull this off, it would be quite the upset.
San Francisco is a banged-up bunch, playing the game without quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end George Kittle, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings, as well as defensive end Nick Bosa. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has called a good game up to this point, frequently getting Christian McCaffrey involved.
It’s setting up to be a good finish, and we’ll see which team prevails. It is worth pointing out that a tie is a possibility, as we saw this past Sunday night. The Week 4 game between the Dallas Cowboys (1-2-1) and the Green Bay Packers (2-1-1) ended in a 40-40 tie, the 30th tie in league history dating back to 1974.
