The NFL announced Monday that Dallas Cowboys (3-4) defensive end Sam Williams has been suspended three games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Williams’ suspension went into effect for Sunday’s Week 8 road game against the San Francisco 49ers (4-4). He is eligible for reinstatement on Nov. 11 following the Cowboys’ Week 10 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles (5-2). Williams, however, is out for the season with the torn ACL he sustained during training camp.

The punishment stems from reckless driving charges levied against Williams in 2023 by local police, per Patrik Walker of Cowboys.com. Williams was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, later revealed to be THC, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

“I think anytime you make a mistake it’s a good wakeup call,” head coach Mike McCarthy said at the time. “I believe in Sam Williams, obviously did when we drafted him, and I do even more now. I’ve seen him grow in so many different ways. He needs to slow down. He knows that. That’s the first step.”

Sam Williams serving suspension while on injured reserve

Williams was gearing up for his third season with the Cowboys, who selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. He has suited up in 32 games for Dallas, tallying 8.5 sacks, 48 tackles (30 solo), 16 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles. The team expected him to once again serve as useful depth behind Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence this season.

The Cowboys have since lost both Parsons and Lawrence to injury, as well as rookie pass rusher Marshawn Kneeland. Dallas has 16 sacks through seven games this season after recording 46 in 2023.
