De'Aaron Fox to sign four-year, $229 million contract extension with San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio made a move for PG De’Aaron Fox at the NBA Trade Deadline back in February. Now, the Spurs have invested in him further for the long term with a max extension going into his first full season with the franchise.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania according to his representation in Rich Paul at Klutch Sports, Fox has agreed to and will ink a four-year, maximum contract extension worth $229 million with San Antonio. That will set him as a piece for the Spurs through the rest of the decade until 2030.
“BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs star De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN,” Charania tweeted on Monday afternoon. “The max deal secures Fox’s future in San Antonio through the 2029-30 season.”
“This is a signing that’ll occur later on Monday. De’Aaron Fox and his rep, Rich Paul, navigated a trade to his preferred destination, the only place he wanted to be, San Antonio, back in February. He wanted to be a Spur. He got there, he got his wish and now, months later, he gets the full max contract,” Charania reported live at the time of the news on ‘NBA Today’. “De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama have developed a very close relationship. And, you know, overall, I think, for the Spurs, this is something that they wanted to make sure they got done early this offseason.”

Fox was the centerpiece of a three-team trade between Sacramento, San Antonio, and Chicago that sent him from the Kings, where he spent the first seven and a half seasons of his pro career, to the Spurs. He’d then make 17 appearances, averaging 19.7 points (44.6% FG, 27.4% 3PT on 1.5 makes), 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals, for the team before being shut down with a season-ending surgery on his finger a month and a half after his arrival in mid-March.
That’s after Fox, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Kentucky, was the star point guard for Sacramento. He posted 21.5 points (47.1% FG, 33.3% 3PT on 1.5 makes), 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while with the Kings, including a career-best season in ’22-’23 when Fox was an All-Star, a selection to the All-NBA Third Team, and led Sacramento their first playoff appearance, resulting in a loss in a seven-game series with the Golden State Warriors, since 2006.
San Antonio is building something around Wembanyama, namely in the backcourt with Fox paired with Stephon Castle and now Dylan Harper. Fox is now set as part of that with this max signing of him through the next half decade going into 2030.
