Deatrich Wise injury update: Commanders DE releases statement after season-ending injury

Washington Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. was carted to the locker room after a scary quad injury in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 27-18 loss to the host Green Bay Packers. ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported Wise’s quad injury is season-ending later Friday afternoon.

Earlier Friday, Wise released a message on social media thanking “all the love, prayers, and support” he’s received since the injury. Wise suffered the injury when he was rolled up on an extra point try following a 2-yard touchdown run by Packers running back Josh Jacobs with 7:34 left before halftime.

“I’m truly grateful for all the love, prayers, and support I’ve received. This was an unfortunate experience, but when you give so much to the game and do everything you can to improve for yourself and for your team’s success, it can feel like there’s a lot to play for,” Wise’s Instagram statement read. “When you stop, it can feel like everything around you stops too. But I know the best healer (prayer emoji). God only puts us through what we can handle, and every challenge carries a lesson. Out of every test comes growth, shaping us into who we need to become to accomplish the goals we set from the start.

“I’m on a path to becoming the highest version of myself. And on the bright side I get to spend on time with my family and my sons (happy face emoji). #wiseup”

The 31-year-old Wise, a 2017 fourth-round draft pick out of Arkansas by the New England Patriots, entered Thursday’s primetime matchup questionable after appearing on the injury report with a knee injury. However, he was able to give it a go as the Commanders look to build on last week’s resounding win over the New York Giants to kick off the 2025 season.

The Washington (1-1) defense didn’t allow a touchdown in Week 1’s 21-6 season-opening victory, holding the visiting Giants to just 231 yards of total offense on Sept. 7, but got gashed for 404 yards of total offense, including 135 rushing yards, in Thursday night’s loss at Green Bay. 

After eight seasons with the Patriots, Wise signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Commanders this past offseason. Wise recorded 314 total tackles and 34 sacks in eight years in New England.
