DeVonta Smith injury update: Eagles WR leaves game after scary fall
Coming out of halftime, WR DeVonta Smith was injured trying to make a catch on the sideline for the Eagles. He’s now out of the game against the Chiefs and is being evaluated in the medical tent on Philadelphia’s sideline.
Driving to 3rd and 8, QB Jalen Hurts tried to convert by throwing one up along the sideline to Smith being covered by CB Nohl Williams. The catch wasn’t made, with the Eagles having to settle for another field goal by K Jake Elliott, but with the bigger issue being Smith falling hard and immediately reaching for his lower back.
That was the fifth target of the game for Smith, who had three receptions for 25 yards. AJ Brown, after not being targeted much in the season opener, is currently the leading receiver for Philly this afternoon with five catches for 27 yards just ahead of Smith.
With that, the Eagles’ offense is again being led by their ground game. RB Saquon Barkley has rushed a dozen times at this point for 60 yards and their lone touchdown, while AJ Dillon has 19 yards on three touchdowns and Hurts has ran twice for 13 yards.

Through two games so far this season, Smith has had a slow start. With a game to still finish this evening against Kansas City, Smith has six catches on eight targets for 41 yards. That’s off from the career numbers he has had in the other four years of his career, with a 17-game average of 83 receptions for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns, in the NFL.
Philadelphia is in the middle of a battle in what’s a rematch of Super Bowl LIX against Kansas City. That could now be more difficult for them to close out on the road if Smith is limited in any way with this going through the second half.
