Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins tragically passed away after being hit by a car on the side of the highway. A truly tragic situation, with people around the NFL and everyone involved with the Ohio State football program, where Haskins played college football, mourning the news.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the one who broke the news but not without some controversy. Schefter said Haskins was “a standout at Ohio State before struggling to catch on with Washington and Pittsburgh in the NFL.” Not appropriate for the situation at all, there was some outrage across the internet, including former wide receiver Dez Bryant.

After deleting the original tweet and posting a new one, Schefter took to his podcast to apologize for his wording. Schefter admitted he “failed” by posting it and offered condolences to everyone close to Haskins.

“It was insensitive,” Schefter said. “It was a mistake and I can assure you it was not my intention. I wish I could have that tweet back. The focus should have been on Dwayne. Who he was as a person, a husband, a friend, and so much more. I wanted to apologize to Dwayne’s family, his friends, the players in the National Football League, and offer my condolences to everybody close to Dwayne. And in the way I failed Saturday, I wanted to turn people’s attention to make sure Dwayne is remembered properly.”

Schefter went on to talk about Haskins as not only a football player and his relationship with the Pittsburgh Steelers organization but also the person he was.
