3:00 P.M. ET UPDATE: The weather delay has been lifted following an hour-long delay. The game will resume after a warm-up for both teams.

Sunday’s Week 1 contest between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers has entered a weather delay with 8:32 remaining in the second quarter. Jacksonville has a 10-3 lead over Carolina and will have possession of the football when the game resumes.

The weather forecast calls for rain throughout the afternoon in Jacksonville, but the key factor here is lightning. The NFL has a strict lightning policy. If a lightning strike is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, play is suspended, and a 30-minute “no play” timer begins. Every new lightning strike resets the clock back to 30 minutes.

This exact scenario played out in Thursday’s regular season opener between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. That game was suspended for over an hour due to weather.

Jaguars have outplayed Panthers early in Week 1 matchup

The Panthers are hoping this delay could help them reset. They’ve started the game in a funk, with just 50 total yards of offense. Quarterback Bryce Young is 3-of-6 for 16 yards and an interception.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, have looked better on offense in their first few drives with new head coach Liam Coen calling plays. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is 10-of-14 for 84 yards and a touchdown, a six-yard strike to tight end Hunter Long.

This is also a matchup of the first two receivers to come off the board in this year’s NFL Draft. No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter is making his Jaguars debut. No. 8 overall pick Tetairoa McMillan is currently Carolina’s leading receiver.
