Jaxson Dart was known for wearing No. 2 in his college career at Ole Miss but couldn’t get it as a rookie with the New York Giants. Why? Well it cost too much to get.

Currently, cornerback Deonte Banks has No. 2. He was a first round pick out of Maryland in 2023 while Dart was just selected in the first round last month. Funny enough, Banks wore No. 3 at Maryland but that number is occupied by quarterback Russell Wilson.

Safe to say, Dart would have to jump through a few hoops to get his college number, so he settled on No. 6. Still, it’s a single digit number so it likely looks good for the player and fans!

Dart was cordial about it though, joking Banks wanted too much money for his jersey number. So hopefully Giant fans who bought Dart’s rookie number won’t have to change their purchase!

For example, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was No. 2 during his rookie season in 2020. He changed to No. 1 to reflect his Oklahoma number in 2021 and has been that number since. So a No. 2 Hurts jersey is vintage!

Perhaps that’ll be the case for Dart’s No. 6 one day? Or it could go down in Giants history at some point!

As far as Dart’s chances to play this season, well that’ll depend on a lot. Wilson was brought in as the projected starter and Jameis Winston in as the veteran backup. Dart is the developmental first round pick that could end up being the franchise quarterback.

But as it stands right now, he’ll be brought along as a third man on the totem poll. However, if New York struggles again, the Dart plug might be pulled, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“Jaxson Dart, I heard he threw the ball well yesterday, it’s only one day rookie mini camp, but Brian Daboll is really excited about this guy, more excited about him than really any other quarterback since Josh Allen that he’s worked with,” Fowler said on SportsCenter on  May 10. “And so really it’s a matter of when he plays. The Giants do feel like they have an infrastructure in place with a good defense and Russell Wilson to win games and help him just develop behind the scenes. But we know if they do lose some games, there could be pressure to play him.”

Dart put together a decorated career at Ole Miss after transferring from USC. He became the program’s all-time leader in passing yards, breaking Eli Manning’s previous record. In 2024, he led the nation with 10.8 pass yards per attempt while totaling 4,279 yards and 29 touchdowns.
