Jerry Jones broaches subject of Matt Eberflus' future with Cowboys, gives telling admission
With the Dallas Cowboys eliminated from playoff contention, the focus has shifted to what the 2026 Cowboys will look like. The future of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will be one to watch in the weeks ahead.
Ultimately, that’s a decision for team owner/general manager Jerry Jones to make. Jones talked about Eberflus during a Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The Fan and said that it’s his belief that coaches should adapt their scheme to the players. Jones doesn’t see talent as an issue for the Cowboys’ defense.
“I’m satisfied that the players we have fit what we’re trying to do very well,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.
Dallas has the No. 1 offense in the NFL. Defensively, the numbers tell a much different story. They are 29th in yards allowed per game and 31st in points allowed per game. In terms of EPA per play, only the Cincinnati Bengals rank worse than the Cowboys.
Jerry Jones, Cowboys need to make a decision about Matt Eberflus’ future
Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings, J.J. McCarthy had arguably his best game as a pro. He completed 15-of-24 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas’ defense. Jones has noticed a trend this season, one he doesn’t like.

“It seems like we’re always saying that about these quarterbacks — some of them that haven’t played as well, but when they play us, they play better,” Jones said, via Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News. “I think that’s telling.”
If the Cowboys simply got average production out of their defense, perhaps their 2025 season could have been different. Perhaps they would be playing postseason football. That’s not their reality and now, the organization must decide if Eberflus deserves one more year to figure it out.
“The adjustments that we should be making [defensively] should be with these next three games in mind,” Jones said after Sunday’s game. “With three games left in the short time that we’ve got to play them in, then that will impact any adjustments that you make regarding coaching with the time frame we’re dealing with. That’s a legit question.”
