New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is in critical condition after being shot in Midtown early Sunday morning, and is “now clinging to life at Bellevue Hospital,” according to the New York Post. The shooting reportedly took place around 2 am ET, according to New York City Police, who did not identify Boyd, a Texas alum, as the victim to the Post.

Police did tell the Post that the shooting remains under investigation and there have been no arrests as of printing. WABC-7 reported officers found Boyd with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, and he was immediately transported to Bellevue Hospital.

The New York Jets released a statement about Boyd shortly after noon ET Sunday: “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 29-year-old Boyd is seven-year NFL pro who is currently on injured reserve with the Jets, which lost to the rival New England Patriots, 27-14, on Thursday night. Boyd was a seventh-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Texas, where he was a first-team All-Big 12 selection as a senior in 2018. Boyd has also played for the Arizona Cardinals (2023) and the Houston Texans (2023-24).

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Boyd was placed on IR in mid-August after sustaining a shoulder injury in practice earlier that month and has not logged a snap with the Jets this season. Boyd has 105 total tackles, including 72 solo, in 81 career games across his seven NFL season, the first four coming with the Vikings, where he was a built a reputation as a special teams playmaker.

Boyd appeared in all 17 games for the Texans last season, logging 365 snaps on special teams for the second-most on the team. Prior to that, Boyd totaled 95 tackles on defense in four seasons with Minnesota, and led the Vikings in special teams snaps with 302 as a rookie in 2019 and 403 in 2022.
