New Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has made one of his key staff moves, reportedly hiring Greg Roman to be the team’s offensive coordinator, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2.

This comes after Roman’s name came up as a rumored staff member for Harbaugh even before he landed the Chargers job. Wilson previously reported, “Per league sources, offensive coordinator could be Greg Roman.” Meanwhile, the morning after Harbaugh was hired by Los Angeles, NFL insider Ian Rapoport brought up Roman as a potential name to look out for on Harbaugh’s staff.

Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh have had a long relationship with one another. Roman was the associate head coach at Stanford for two of Harbaugh’s seasons there. He then followed Harbaugh to the NFL, where he became the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator.

Roman, however, did not follow Harbaugh to Michigan when he decided to go to Ann Arbor. Instead, he became the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator before later joining the staff with the Baltimore Ravens. That, of course, meant he was working for Jim’s brother John Harbaugh. From 2018 through the 2022 season, he was the offensive coordinator there.

In total, Greg Roman will bring more than 25 years of NFL experience with him to the Los Angeles Chargers. There, his job is going to be to work with Justin Herbert, one of the league’s most talented young quarterbacks. The hope is that together the Chargers offense is going to take a step forward and compete for the AFC West.

In his career, Roman has directly worked with Lamar Jackson, Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith, and David Carr among others.

Paul Finebaum: Jim Harbaugh move from Michigan to LA Chargers an ‘unbelievable script’

For ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum, Jim Harbaugh making the jump from Michigan to the NFL in the way that he did made for an unbelievable movie script.

“Well, he’s going to the right place because even Steve Spielberg and Hollywood could not have come up with a more unbelievable script. Here’s a guy who three years ago nearly gets fired at the University of Michigan. His contract gets cut in half. What does he do? He wins the national championship,” Finebaum said.

“And don’t forget, two years ago he literally waits in the waiting room, eating sacks, while the Minnesota Vikings are about to call him in and they turn him down. It’s absolutely humiliating. He tucks his tail, goes back to Michigan, and what does he do? He makes three straight runs at the Playoff, he wins a national championship, and then he leaves behind a very complicated legacy, but a national championship.”
