Jim Harbaugh offers no update on Justin Herbert: 'I thought the statement was very thorough'

The Los Angeles Chargers announced Thursday that quarterback Justin Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh, addressing the injury for the first time following Thursday’s practice, elected not to get into too much detail, referring to the statement the team put out.

“No update,” Harbaugh said. “I thought the statement was very thorough.”

The Chargers said that Herbert is to be in a walking boot for approximately two weeks, per doctor recommendation.

“Following yesterday’s practice, Justin Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot,” the statement said. “Doctors have recommended approximately two weeks in a boot. Followed by a graduated return to play protocol. With the expectation that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.”

While Herbert is expected to be under center for the Week 1 home tilt against the Las Vegas Raiders, he could be dealing with some discomfort for the entirety of the season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported.

Chargers continuing training camp without Justin Herbert on the field

The Chargers are integrating several pieces into their offense this season, all under a new scheme led by Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Out are running back Austin Ekeler and receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. In their place are running backs Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, as well as receivers Ladd McConkey and D.J. Chark.

Harbaugh has no concerns for how the offense will continue to gel with Herbert off the field.

“Just full steam ahead,” Harbaugh said. “The preparation, the work continues. He’s not on the field in the practice, but meeting room, still in the training environment. That chemistry, that rapport that you build with those position players, his teammates — that continues.”

Herbert, 26, is entering his fifth season in the NFL. He is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 65.1% passing in 13 games. Herbert signed a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension last offseason.
