Former Texas Longhorn Jordan Spieth has been no stranger to chipping in to winning golf tournaments over the years. On Wednesday afternoon, he holed out such a ridiculous chip to defeat Mackenzie Hughes in the first round of the WGC Match Play Championship, that he apologized for it after he made it. Already up four holes, Spieth found himself in a difficult lie just above the bunker. From 86 feet away from the hole, the Texan was once again able to find the magic with his chip shot that we’ve seen him unleash so many times over the years.

Check it out below.

The walk-off win gave Spieth a 4-and-3 win over Mackenzie Hughes, and an early lead in group play. In his next match, the former Longhorn will face Taylor Montgomery, with the winner having an excellent chance to advance to Saturday’s knockout round. Spieth is finding magic around the greens at an excellent time, only a few weeks away from Augusta National and The Masters.

Few players out there have the track record at Augusta National that Spieth does. The place brings out his creativity and feel around the greens better than just about any course on tour and it shows in his results. Since 2014, he has five top finishes in the Top 5 (T2, Win, T2, 3, and T3). He missed the cut in last year’s tournament, but Spieth has been in great form recently, with two top five finishes in his last three outings. He’ll always be one of the top favorites at Augusta National because of his track record there and due to his recent form, it’s fair to say he’ll be a popular pick there yet again.

He’s already won 13 times on the PGA Tour during his prolific career, including three of the four majors (he finished second at the PGA Championship in 2015). During his win at Augusta National, Spieth set the record for the most birdies during The Masters (28) and also became the second-person ever to win the most prestigious event in all of golf. Spieth’s last win on the PGA Tour came in the 2022 version of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He shot 13-under for the tournament and defeated Patrick Cantlay in a playoff.

It’ll be exciting to see how Spieth and everyone else perform at The Masters–the most anticipated event of the golf calendar.
